Stop 1Bevagna, Umbria
Bevagna
Medieval quarters and artisan workshops in the Valle Umbra
You stay in the countryside near Bevagna or Montefalco, where vineyards climb the hillsides and stone farmhouses look across the Valle Umbra. Bevagna itself keeps four medieval quarters, the Gaite, where blacksmiths, silk weavers and candlemakers still work in workshops unchanged since the 1200s. During the last week of June the Mercato delle Gaite brings the town back to the Middle Ages with period dress, open forges and craft stalls. Spello rises on a Roman foundation, its lanes paved in pink limestone from Monte Subasio, its palaces striped in the same stone. Gubbio stands alone on the Apennine slope, a vertical town of gray stone and Corinthian columns where the Palazzo dei Consoli dominates the skyline.
We arrange a private guide in Gubbio who walks you through the Roman theater, the ducal palace and the ceramics quarter. You drive yourself between towns, stopping where the road opens onto the plain. Perugia is forty minutes north for a chocolate tasting in one of the city's historic houses, where cacao is still ground on stone. Dinner the first night is at your hotel or a nearby restaurant we book. The rest you choose as you go.
Arranged for you: Welcome dinner, private guided visit of Gubbio, chocolate experience in Perugia, and three nights countryside accommodation near Bevagna or Montefalco.

After breakfast at the Hotel, we would suggest a visit of Bevagna. Here you will discover the "Gaite", the small quarters of the village, where every year during the last week of June, you can live the amazing experience of the trip back in the past: the Mercato delle Gaite (the Market of the Gaite) is a reproduction of a Medieval Market of craft workshops still alive in Bevagna: the art of iron, silk, perfume, loom, paper, candles, everything produced according the ancient way and tradition. After spending the morning visiting some of these workshops, enjoy a light lunch or local products tasting in Bevagna before to transfer to Perugia, capital of Umbria region. In Perugia you will meet a English speaking guide to visit this elegant town with its medieval palaces and squares.
