Tuscany
Mid Sept – Late Oct
The vendemmia runs in three acts – Chianti Classico mid-September, Brunello in Montalcino late September, Bolgheri on the coast first half of September.
Piedmont & the Langhe
Mid Oct – Late Nov
The late Nebbiolo harvest, the Alba white truffle season, the cru system, Piazza Duomo. The Italy Italians keep for themselves. Grinzane Cavour Castle, WiMu Wine Museum, Monforte d’Alba.
The Dolomites
Mid Oct (peak)
For a couple weeks each year, the European larch turns gold across the range. Lake Braies, Arco, Cortina D’Ampezzo, Santa Magdalena, Ortisei, and Corvara.
Veneto & Prosecco Hills
Mid Sept – Mid Oct
The UNESCO Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Prosecco hills at harvest. Glera on the steep rive. The Valpolicella appassimento rooms running into late October. Pairs naturally with the Dolomites.
Umbria
Late Oct – Mid Dec
Olive harvest in Tuscany and Umbria runs through November. The Norcia black-truffle tradition. Quieter than Tuscany; more rooted; deeply rewarding for repeat travelers.
Sicily & Mt. Etna
Sept – Early Nov
The volcano extends the season. Etna’s Nerello Mascalese harvest into October. Catania, Valley Of The Temples, Zafferana Etnea Festival. Warm enough to swim through October, cool enough for hiking on the volcano.
