Stop 1Bettona, Umbria
Bettona
Etruscan walls and medieval lanes above the valley
You base in Bettona, a walled village whose Etruscan foundations and medieval towers crown a ridge above vineyards and olive groves. The streets are quiet, the views long, and the evening light catches the stone in shades of honey and rose. From here you reach Assisi in twenty minutes, Perugia in fifteen, Montefalco and Spoleto within the hour. Your hotel sits inside the old walls, and after each day of art and tasting you return to a terrace overlooking the green heart of Umbria.
The guided tour of Assisi takes you through the Basilica of Saint Francis, where Giotto's frescoes tell the saint's life in color still vivid after seven centuries. In Perugia you walk the Corso Vannucci past Gothic palaces and descend into the Rocca Paolina, the Renaissance fortress half-buried beneath the modern city. A morning in Montefalco brings you to an olive oil mill for tasting and lunch among the groves, then on to Spoleto, where Roman arches and Romanesque churches mark the layers of a city that has hosted popes and festivals for a thousand years.
Arranged for you: We arrange three nights in Bettona, a welcome dinner, guided tour of Assisi, and a tasting with lunch at an olive oil mill near Montefalco.

Day by day in Bettona
Arrive at your hotel in Bettona, a charming hilltop village overlooking the Umbrian countryside. After check-in, enjoy a welcome drink and some time at leisure to begin exploring this ancient town, known for its Etruscan roots, medieval walls, and panoramic views. In the evening, savor a welcome dinner featuring traditional Umbrian dishes, then relax with an overnight stay at your cozy hotel.
After breakfast, begin your discovery of Umbria with a guided tour of Assisi, one of Italy’s most important spiritual destinations. Walk through the historic streets and visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, renowned for its stunning Gothic and Romanesque architecture and extraordinary frescoes by Giotto and other masters. Enjoy lunch on your own at a local trattoria. In the afternoon, we recommend heading to Perugia, the lively regional capital. Stroll along Corso Vannucci, admire elegant medieval palaces, the beautiful Fontana Maggiore, and explore the fascinating Rocca Paolina, a partially underground Renaissance fortress. Take a break in one of the city’s many cafés or bakeries to sample a pastry or taste the famous Perugina chocolate. Return to your hotel in Bettona for the night.
After breakfast, depart for Montefalco, a small, charming village often called the “Balcony of Umbria” for its sweeping views over vineyards and olive groves. Visit a local olive oil mill to learn about the production of high-quality Umbrian extra virgin olive oil, then enjoy a light lunch of regional specialties paired with the mill’s oils. In the afternoon, we suggest continuing to Spoleto, a beautiful city of art known for its Roman, medieval, and Renaissance monuments and the renowned Festival of Two Worlds. On the way, pause to admire the striking Ponte delle Torri, a medieval bridge spanning a deep gorge and surrounded by lush greenery. Nearby, browse important cashmere outlets where you’ll have time to shop for fine Italian knitwear. Return to your hotel in Bettona for a farewell dinner featuring local Umbrian cuisine, followed by an overnight stay.
Stop 2Departure from Umbria
Departure
Morning in the ceramic studios before departure
You check out after breakfast. If time allows before your onward journey, we recommend a stop in Torgiano to visit the Wine Museum, housed in a seventeenth-century palazzo and dedicated to the history of viticulture in central Italy. Or drive to Deruta, where the town's ceramic tradition stretches back five hundred years. The Ceramic Museum holds maiolica pieces from the Renaissance to the present, and along the narrow streets you can watch artisans paint designs onto plates and bowls using techniques unchanged since the workshops first opened. The drive to Rome or Florence takes under two hours, to Perugia airport thirty minutes.
Arranged for you: We arrange private transfer to your departure point, with time for a stop in Torgiano or Deruta if your schedule permits.

After breakfast, check out from your hotel. If you have the morning free, we recommend a stop in Torgiano to visit its Wine Museum and learn more about the region’s viticultural traditions, or a visit to Deruta, one of Italy’s most important centers for maiolica ceramics. In Deruta, explore the Ceramic Museum and wander through the town’s historic streets, where small artisan workshops still produce hand-painted pottery using centuries-old techniques.
