Ancient ruins and baroque fountains in the Eternal City
We base you in the historic center where the layers of Rome stack close together: republican ruins under baroque piazzas, Renaissance palaces facing medieval lanes. Your guide walks you through the sunken columns of Largo di Torre Argentina, across Campo de' Fiori when the market is running, into Piazza Navona with its Bernini fountains. The Pantheon stands as it did for Hadrian. The Spanish Steps climb to Trinità dei Monti. The Trevi Fountain catches the afternoon light.
Beyond the guided morning you have time to follow your own list. The city opens early for cornetti and closes late over Testaccio suppers. We give you the location and the introduction; the rest of the day moves at your own pace.
Arranged for you: We arrange the centrally located hotel, daily breakfast, and the three-hour walking tour with an English-speaking guide.

Stop 2Florence, Tuscany
Florence
Renaissance masterworks and Tuscan hill towns en route
The coach carries you north through Umbria, stopping first in Assisi where the Basilica of Saint Francis holds Giotto's frescoes in the upper church and Cimabue's work below. The stones are pink Subasio limestone. Then Siena, still medieval inside its walls, the Campo sloping like a scallop shell. You reach Florence by evening and check in near the Duomo.
The next morning your guide walks you through Piazza del Duomo: Brunelleschi's dome, Giotto's campanile, the Baptistery's bronze doors. At Santa Croce you see Cimabue's crucifix, one of three that survive. The afternoon is yours for the Uffizi, the Oltrarno workshops, or the optional half-day trip to Pisa where the tower leans four degrees off true. Dinner is included both nights.
Arranged for you: We arrange the centrally located four-star hotel, daily breakfast, coach transfers from Rome, guided visits in Assisi and Siena, guided walking tour of Florence, and two dinners.

Venice
Basilicas, canals and lagoon islands for three nights
