Canals, markets and the art of slow mornings
We hold four nights in Venice, where the winter light slants low across the lagoon and the crowds thin to a human scale. Your mornings begin with espresso and cornetti, then walks through the Castello or Dorsoduro districts where laundry still hangs over the rio and shopkeepers sweep their stoops. We arrange a walking tour of St. Mark's Basilica (its gold mosaics best seen in afternoon light), the Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs. Another day we send you by vaporetto to Murano, where you watch a maestro pull molten glass into form, then on to Burano for lacemakers and painted fishermen's houses the color of sugared almonds.
One afternoon belongs to the Rialto Market, where Venetians buy branzino and radicchio di Treviso. A gondola ride threads the back canals at the hour the sun drops behind the campanile. Evenings are bacari wine bars, crudo di pesce and a Bellini where Hemingway drank his. Winter in Venice rewards the patient: shorter queues, lower tides, the city returned to itself.
