Italy in September, October and November

The Season Italians Keep for Themselves

The light softens. The crowds thin out of the Uffizi and St. Mark’s. In the hills, the vendemmia fills the cellars, and by late October the frantoio is pressing new olive oil you can taste on warm bread the same afternoon.

We design custom autumn trips around what the season does best: wine country at harvest, truffle markets, chestnut festivals in the hill towns, and long days that are still warm in the south. Then we arrange it end to end, so the only thing you plan is how long to stay at lunch.

Harvest season fills early.

The best autumn rooms in Tuscany, Piedmont and the Amalfi Coast go first. Start the conversation now.

Best for wine and truffles

Piedmont and the Langhe

October in the Langhe means the white truffle market in Alba, Barolo and Barbaresco poured by the people who made them, and tajarin with shaved truffle at lunch. Barolo Castle, Monforte and Serralunga d’Alba sit on the ridges between the vineyards.

Best for food and wine lovers and for a second trip to Italy.

Best for the harvest

Tuscany and Umbria

Chianti Classico estates at harvest, Brunello in Montalcino, Vino Nobile in Montepulciano. In November, new olive oil at the frantoio. Umbria’s hill towns, Assisi, Todi and Spello, are quiet and golden.

Stay in the countryside and visit Florence and Siena by day.

Best for quieter cities

Venice, the Veneto and the Dolomites

Venice in autumn belongs to Venetians again. Murano and Burano by boat, cicchetti in the bacari, the Prosecco hills of Valdobbiadene an hour north. In October the larches of the Dolomites turn gold above Cortina and Val Gardena.

Best for travelers who want the classics without the summer crowds.

In their words
“We encountered our fair share of bustling crowds and definitely felt the unusual heat wave, but it didn't spoil the magic one bit. A return trip during the off-season would give the opportunity to dive even deeper.”

Autumn in Italy Questions

Many of our travelers think it is the best. September and October bring warm days, cooler evenings and fewer crowds in Rome, Florence and Venice. The vendemmia is under way in the wine regions, white truffle season opens in Piedmont, and the new olive oil arrives in November.

The white truffle season in Piedmont runs from early October into December, and the market in Alba is held at weekends through the season. We plan Langhe days around it, with tastings in Barolo and Barbaresco nearby.

Yes. Most hotels on the Amalfi Coast and Capri stay open through October, the sea is still warm enough for a swim in early autumn, and the roads are quieter than in summer. By November many seasonal hotels close, so we shift coastal time earlier in the trip.

Layers. Days in the south can be warm into October, while evenings in the hills and the north turn cool, and November brings rain. Your planner sends notes for your exact route and dates on the briefing call before you leave.

Tuscany and Umbria for the harvest and the olive oil, Piedmont for truffles and Barolo, Venice and the Veneto for quieter canals and Prosecco hills, the Dolomites for golden larches in October, and Sicily and Puglia for warm days well into the season.
