Stop 1Sorrento, Campania
Sorrento
Cliffs, ruins and island ferries above the bay
We base you on the Sorrento peninsula, the limestone shelf that divides the Bay of Naples from the Gulf of Salerno. The route south from Rome crosses Vesuvius country: we stop first in Naples for the Bourbon palaces and the vaulted Galleria Umberto, then continue to Pompeii where a specialist guide walks you through the excavated city, its forum columns still standing, its villa walls still painted. By late afternoon you reach Sorrento, a working town of lemon groves and ceramic shops built along the clifftop above a small marina.
The next morning we hold ferry tickets to Capri. You ride to Marina Grande, transfer to a wooden rowboat for the Blue Grotto (when the sea is calm enough), then climb by funicular to Capri town. The Augustus Gardens cascade down the eastern flank of the island with views toward the Faraglioni stacks. Between guided stops you have time to walk the lanes, take an espresso in the Piazzetta, or ride the chairlift to Monte Solaro. On your final morning the coast is yours: stay in Sorrento or ask us to arrange a driver for Positano, Amalfi and the terraced gardens at Ravello.
Arranged for you: We arrange the transfer from Rome with an English-speaking tour leader, the guided walking tour of Naples including Piazza del Plebiscito, the Royal Palace and the Galleria Umberto, the guided tour of Pompeii, two nights in Sorrento, the ferry to Capri with Blue Grotto tickets, and the transfer back to Rome.

We missed our connecting flight in Munich. I had just got through customs and was looking up the number to call when Trips 2 Italy called me. They told me exactly what to do and they already knew what flight we had been rebooked on.
