Palermo

Norman mosaics and street markets in Sicily's capital

1nights

We open your week in Palermo, the island's nerve center of art, architecture and unbothered street life. You arrive independently, check in at your hotel, then meet your tour escort and the rest of your group over cocktails and a shared dinner. It's an easy first evening, with just enough ceremony to start the journey and none of the formality that can weigh down group travel.

Arranged for you: We arrange your hotel, welcome cocktail, shared group dinner and tour escort introduction.

Catania

Volcano slopes and baroque port city on the Ionian

3nights

We base you in Catania, the working port at the foot of Mount Etna. From here, you travel north to Cefalù for its Norman cathedral mosaics and medieval wash-house carved into rock, then inland to Castelbuono for panettone and rosolio in a pastry shop the town is known for. A farmhouse lunch anchors the day. You return to Catania that evening.

The next morning we drive you up the volcano to around two thousand meters, where weather permitting you walk among old craters and look down over the Ionian coast. Lunch is on the slopes, then you continue to Taormina for free time along Corso Umberto's lace and coral shops or a granita on a terrace. Day four takes you south to Siracusa's Greek amphitheater and Ear of Dionysus, then across to Ortigia Island for the cathedral and Fountain of Aretusa. After lunch you tour Modica and settle in Ragusa by evening, but your bags stay in Catania for a third night.

Arranged for you: We arrange three nights in Catania, daily breakfast, farmhouse lunch on day two, restaurant lunch on Etna and Ortigia, private coach with escort throughout, entrance to Cefalù Cathedral, Siracusa archaeological park, and pastry tasting in Castelbuono.

Agrigento

Greek temples and Roman mosaics across the southern hills

1nights

We move you west, stopping first in Caltagirone to watch ceramic artisans at their wheels and benches. The real pause is Piazza Armerina, where the Villa Romana del Casale holds the largest collection of late Roman floor mosaics anywhere, the bikini girls among them. Lunch is in town, then you continue to Agrigento for the Valley of the Temples, a ridge of Doric columns and pediments so well preserved they look closer to two centuries old than twenty-five. You overnight here.

Arranged for you: We arrange one night in Agrigento, daily breakfast, restaurant lunch in Piazza Armerina, private coach with escort, entrance to Villa Romana del Casale and Valley of the Temples, and ceramic workshop visit in Caltagirone.

Palermo

Return to the capital for Monreale mosaics and markets

2nights

We drive you north from Agrigento, stopping at Selinunte for the largest Greek temple ruins in the Mediterranean, set on bluffs above the sea. A farmhouse near Castelvetrano serves lunch with its own olive oil, Castelvetrano black bread and the town's famous green olives. You continue to Erice, a medieval village on a mountaintop with Phoenician walls and views over Trapani and the salt pans. By evening you're back in Palermo.

The next morning we guide you through the city's Palatine Chapel mosaics, cathedral, opera house and Praetorian Square, then drive to Monreale for the twelfth-century gold mosaics in the cathedral and the Benedictine cloister. You return for lunch at the hotel and have the afternoon free to revisit a market, walk to Mondello beach or rest before the final evening.

Arranged for you: We arrange two nights in Palermo, daily breakfast, farmhouse lunch near Selinunte, hotel lunch on day seven, private coach with escort, entrance to Selinunte archaeological park, Monreale Cathedral and cloister, Palatine Chapel, and olive oil tasting.
